Missions

The Pontifical Swiss Guard are the constant watchmen of the pontiff and his residence. They guard the official entrances to the Vatican City, run access checks, and are available to the many international visitors to the Vatican.

The Swiss Guard keep watch at papal audiences and church ceremonies where the pontiff is present. This surveillance is done in both traditional uniform and in civilian clothes.

Higher officers accompany the pontiff on his travels abroad.

The Swiss Guard provide a military guard of honour at official visits from presidents, prime ministers and ambassadors.
The guard of honour is also present at masses, audiences and entrances to the Vatican City.
